1st Trip to Build-a-Bear

Sera was given a giftcard for her birthday. Is anyone shocked that she picked out the frilliest dress she could find to make a kitty bride?

Overheard at the Grocery Checkout
Sera (twirling in her new dress while holding her purchase of a tube of mini M&Ms):  Like my new dress?

Hearing-impaired Geriatric Gentleman (bagging our groceries): You want a sack?

Sera: No, thank you. I don't want a snack.

Sera: Mommy, why he ask me I want a snack? I got M&Ms.

Me (observing and holding in laughter)

Jim (paying for groceries and oblivious to this conversation)

Grocery shopping can be fun!

It's Four
In case you were wondering.  The question?

How old does your child need to be before they realize their mother can't sing?

Every morning on our way to school, Sera sings.  She also directs.  She tells us what to sing and counts us down with  ah-one, ah-two, ah-one, two three.

Yesterday, she assigned us each a song.  We sang.  She then gave Jim and herself another song and told me to be the audience.

This morning, we were listening to a Disney CD.  I started to join in on a A Whole New World.  Sera stopped to remind me I was the audience now.

I knew this day would come.  But Sera doesn't know something very important.  It's a motto a friend and I created in college.  We threw off the shackles of embarassment at our lack of singing voice and declared, "If you can't sing well, sing LOUD!"

Mwwhahaha

Note:  Yes, Sera turned four last Saturday.  We've had a slight hold up in getting the photos on the computer, but a huge spring break/birthday photo extravaganza is coming up soon.

Fire Them All
I read and hear every where about how that Rhode Island school deserved what it got.  Those teachers and that union needed to learn a lesson.  It's so disheartening when you see people who just accept "news" at face value instead of learning all the details.  Here's an excerpt from a blog that most people won't see.  I found it to be very interesting.

What Went Down in Georgia

By Susan Graham

On Sunday, The Washington Post posed the question, "Our kids need great teachers. Who makes the grade?" Well, it might help if there were a data based rubric of what makes a great teacher, but Marc Fisher walked away from his experience observing potential with the Center for Inspired Teaching acknowledging that
Maybe there is such a thing as an "inspired teacher" -- someone who listens well and takes students at face value, someone with high standards and perseverance who is also warm, vulnerable and loving. Sounds like a character who exists only in fiction -- and that's part of the problem with the school reform movement.
That's a little vague, but maybe it will help some of the overworked school system HR directors. They've got their hands full this fall because it seems that we've discovered a new fix for broken schools. Just load up a bunch of silver bullets and fire the whole staff (including the cafeteria lady and the custodian). Surely everyone has heard that on February 25th in Central Falls, Rhode Island, all the teachers at Central Falls High School were fired. The story was blasted across the evening news. The New York Times covered the story. The blogosphere buzzed.

Three Years Ago
I had big plans to write today's post earlier in the week, but it didn't happen. To compare photos over the years, you'll have to go to my archives for previous April 2nds.

Because three years ago today the most precious being was placed in my arms. In two weeks and a day, she will turn four years old. Watching her bloom has been one of the greatest joys of my life. Another has been watching Jim bloom as her father. I don't think anyone could love a child more.

This is always a poignant time for me. March 31st is our wedding anniversary, 10 years!, and April 2nd is our family day anniversary. A time to reflect on life before and life with Jim and Sera.

No disrespect to Kansas, but life before was Kansas and life now is Oz, full of color and songs.
